Everjoy Consulting suggests its time to hang up the boots for unethical recruiters

Everjoy Consulting puts the call out to unethical recruiters.... hang your boots up now!

Its no secret that many recruiters are doing it tough in light of the global financial crisis.  Its no secret that the tough times may continue for a few in the marketplace.  However for those recruiters who are still succeeding in light of the downturn, the biggest hinderance on our continued success is the increasing levels of unethical behavior seen in the marketplace.

We consider some of the practices we’ve seen to be no different to deliberately tripping a player in front of the goals about to kick a goal.

If you are a recruiter who considers any of the following appropriate, then its time to admit defeat as a recruiter and hang up the boots for good:

  • Plagiarizing the advertisement of another recruiter in a bid to find out the client from the candidates who respond (you’ve already missed the starting gun, so why play catch up?)
  • Calling up other recruiters pretending to be a candidate in a bid to find out the client (Try calling a client and developing a relationship!)
  • Changing the name on a candidates resume and presenting it to other recruiters through an application with your phone number (This is quite simply fraudulent…)
  • Pretending you have the right to work a role in order to secure candidates and prevent other recruiters from having access to a candidate (This is not a practice which brings self benefit, only detriment to recruiters working the role already and more importantly the candidate involved)
  • Telling a candidate the other recruiter doesn’t have the right to work a role when really its clear that you don’t have the first hand knowledge to say this with authority. (even with preferred supplier lists, a good recruiter will still get the right to work a role and has obviously identified the quality candidate before you anyway.  You’ve lost the race.  Move on an improve)
  • Trawling job sites trying to guess the clients of other recruiters (Try maintaining true and real relationships with your customer base instead of trying to tail of the relationships of others)

These are all practices which we have seen happening with increasing frequency in the marketplace.  All these practices are essentially a massive case of denial.  If you are lowering yourself to any of these acts in a bid for short term gain, you might as well admit that you do not know how to recruit and resign from your role now.  The only alternative is to seek advice from either your manager or successful recruiters to find out how to utilize your time more effectively to nurture and develop strong client and candidate relationship.

Instead of participating in any of the practices above, a recruiter is better served utilizing their time to service their customers, being clients and candidates alike, effectively and achieving success through continued value add to all parties involved.

Whilst this article is to appeal to those recruiters who perhaps didn’t realise the impact that such activity has on the rest of the recruitment industry and our reputation, we would actually like recruitment managers to take note instead.  If your recruiter cant kick goals in this market, it is our suggestion that their activities should be monitored closely and if any of the practices above are occurring, hang their boots up for them.  If recruitment managers collectively do this, we are all a step closer to maintaining the quality of the industry and ensuring the success of the rest of us.
